2009 Jeep Commander Commands The Highway

commander-right-frontDriving the 2009 Jeep Commander is sort of like being King of the Highway.  This is definitely not a Jeep Renegade or Jeep Cherokee.  This is one big and awesome sport utility vehicle.

Rental Car Roulette

Several days ago I had the opportunity to be asking the lady on the other side of the rental car counter at the Denver Airport for the quick exit special that I had signed up for with my normal profile.  She said you can have your choice of #1 or #2 or #3 … you get the picture.  I said, let’s try the Jeep.

Let’s Try The Jeep

commander-driver-insideFuel mileage was good for a big SUV averaging 17 mpg for the 4WD 5 speed automatic 8 cylinder 4.7L gasoline or E85 engine.  According to the EPA Fuel Economy Site the Commander rates an average score of 18 highway and 15 combined so the Automotive Tribune mileage was consistent with the driving that was mostly highway.

Luxury Appointments

If you have not driven an up-scale vehicle lately you are in for a pleasant surprise.   If you are accustomed to the spartan truck or econobox this is not your Jeep.  If you like superb leather seating, satellite radio, navigation, back-up camera, front and rear air conditioning, and a host of other features this Jeep delivers the goods.

Visual Impressions

commnader-passenger-insideThis is one big vehicle.  Maybe not Suburban big but not too far removed.  It provides a very commanding highway presence.  My passengers felt that they were definitely in the limousine mode.  Lots of room to stretch out up front and reasonable leg room in the second row.  With the third row seats down there is ample cargo room for all sorts of cargo.    With the third row seats up you will have very limited cargo capacity.  Outside aappearance is refined classic Jeep.

Driving Impression

The Commander provides luxury and comfort in a big way with a very commanding view of the highway in superb front seat comfort.  It is comfortable to drive with no great surprises in acceleration, brake performance, or maneuvering.  It is very predictable and comfortable in normal driving on the highway.

Commander of the Highway

This is the cleanest and modern iteration of the classic Jeep design for highway use from outside appearance to a very nicely executed interior with comfortable seats that look great.
