Top Gear & James May – A Working Day

April 1, 2009 Automotive Topics 2 Comments
Top Gear, the TV show, represents something of an organized, disorderly, chaos that ultimately involves every mode of transportLast year your Tribune Editor was asked to assist James May and the BBC Top Gear camera crew with filming James’ attempt to air mail delivery of a letter to John Travolta who used to live at Spruce Creek Fly-In but now lives in Ocala at Jumbolair which has a private runway big enough for his Boeing 707.

Top Gear was quite aware that John Travolta no longer lived at Spruce Creek.  However, that did not bother their story line one bit as the writers and producer got all enthusiastic about having James May bring a letter to John’s former house.

Not having had an opportunity to see the episode I can only reflect on some of the fun associated with filming and spending some time with James May and the rest of the BBC crew.

It is important to note that James is a Pilot and enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time in an aircraft flying around Spruce Creek.  He also spent quite a bit of time taxing the plane around Spruce Creek so that the camera crew could get some good photos.

For the photo shoot it was decided that James should taxi the plane to a house just down the taxiway from the former Travolta home.   This was done to maintain some level of disconnect in the event that a paparazzi ended up at Spruce Creek, which would be totally the wrong location but that does not mean that there is no limit to confusion.  This certainly is a Top Gear script!

    Hi there,

I came upon your site by accident, while googling for something different. I did see the programme James was working on and enjoyed it very much. It wasn’t Top Gear though, but James May’s Big Ideas.
They only used two minutes of all the footage in the end and the whole John Travolta letter idea was dropped. But you will still like it and the rest of the programme. He did fly some strange planes. I added a link to the YouTube video.

Thanks for update Linden. It was great to work with the entire Top Gear Team. I certainly look forward to the next time we have an opportunity to get together on a project.
